From Slopes to Certification: My CSIA Adventure
I’ve always believed that the best kind of growth happens on the edge of comfort—and often on the edge of skis.
This winter, I decided to level up my mountain game and take on the CSIA Level 1 certification. The Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance (CSIA) is one of the most respected ski instructor certification organizations in the world, known internationally for its high standards, professional training, and excellence in developing skilled, confident instructors.
Part personal challenge, part professional development, part “let’s-see-if-my-quads-survive-this,” the journey was every bit as exhilarating as it was humbling.
Fun fact: I got back into skiing two years ago—after decades of snowboarding. I loved riding, but when the backcountry started calling, skis just made more sense. Skinning uphill, moving efficiently, and accessing remote terrain opened a whole new world. So, I dusted off the skis, embraced the learning curve, and fell back in love with the rhythm of sliding on two planks.
I have trained the whole winter to make sure I was ready to face three packed exam days in Whistler. I dove into the art of teaching skiing—breaking down turns, analyzing movement patterns, and learning to really see the slopes through an instructor’s eyes. I met an amazing crew of skiers equally passionate (and equally sore by day three), and was coached by some of the most encouraging pros in the biz.
Spoiler alert: I passed! 🎉 And more than the badge, what I gained was confidence, clarity, and a whole new way to share the joy of skiing. I’m already looking forward to training for CSIA Level 2 —and beyond, continuing to grow as a skier, instructor, and mountain athlete with every turn.
Whether you're just starting out or looking to level up, keep learning, find a great crew to ride with, and don’t be afraid to chase big goals. And if you're ready for your own mountain adventure—whether in the U.S. or Europe—reach out for lessons, backcountry experiences, and a community that loves the journey as much as the destination.
Ski you on the slopes!
